A Man Playing a Musical Instrument

LL 212

Information

This statuette is part of a pair (the other is LL 213) and depicts a man playing a musical instrument. Unfortunately, the instruments from both statuettes have been lost. It is thought that the man was playing the flute and the woman was playing the mandolin. In 1799, Napoleon and his wife, known as Joséphine, moved into their home, Chateau Malmaison, outside Paris. Napoleon lived at the Chateau Malmaison until their separation in 1809. Lever collected many objects that he thought were once at Malmaison which included this statuette and its pair.
