Mars and Venus

Mars, the god of war, with his discarded armour lying at his feet, is shown embracing Venus, the goddess of beauty. The overall form of the plaque – figures carved in relief and set against an oval background – follows the example of ancient Roman cameos, but the complex and erotic intertwining of the two naked gods is typical of 16th-century subject matter and composition.
