Mercantile marine war medal, 1914-18, awarded posthumously to John Henry Hayes

Mercantile Marime War Medal, 1914-1918, awarded posthumously to John Hayes, an engineer on board Lusitania who died in the sinking. John Henry Lowrie Hayes was born in Liverpool in 1884. He was Junior 5th Engineer on board Lusitania when he married Jeanetta Purves in August 1914. Their daughter Jeanette was born on 27 May 1915 and Cunard paid for her schooling. Jeanetta was one of the last surviving Lusitania crew widows to draw a pension from Cunard. She died in 1984, aged 89.
