Information

The Merseyside Caribbean Carnival was launched in 1978. It was just one of the many community and voluntary run events in Liverpool 8. This poster, from the third carnival in 1980, details the route starting from the Merseyside Caribbean Centre on Amberley Street. Thousands of people, many in elaborate costumes thread through the streets in an explosion of colour and noise. The carnival was a celebration of the city’s diversity and creativity. It was sponsored by the Merseyside Caribbean Council, the Commission for Racial Equality and Merseyside Arts Association.
