Miss Lesbian VII (Amsterdam)

Muholi is a South-African artist, based in Johannesburg. This photographs is from a series of seven works by them. They are collectively titled ‘Miss (Black) Lesbian’. Each photograph features Muholi in a different pose or outfit inspired by beauty pageants. The series challenges the idealised stereotype of female beauty reinforced in these contests. Instead, Muholi celebrates different kinds of female beauty. For example, in this photograph there is a tattoo visible on Muholi's left arm. In others such as 'Miss Lesbian I (Amsterdam)', also in the Walker's collection, hairs are visible on their legs and protrude from their bikini line.
