Greenaway had an international reputation as an illustrator of children’s books. She also painted watercolours of children similar to those featured in her illustrations. First seen at London’s Royal Academy in 1879, 'Misses' shows two elaborately dressed young girls prepared to go out on a winter’s day. The style of their dress would have seemed old fashioned to the Victorian audience. Long fur lined coats and bonnets were a style from the early 19th century. Images like this often induced a sense of nostalgia. The Victorians felt their society had changed quickly and they enjoyed being reminded of the recent past.
