Model of a Cow

M11526

Information

Wooden model of a cow painted white with black spots. The model is made from five pieces with the four legs being separately made and pegged on to the body. Carved detailing for the eyes, nose and mouth. There is quite a lot of surface loss and dirt; with some parts missing such as the ears and horns. Three pegs on the feet survive which were originally inserted into a board, allowing the model to stand upright. Charles Gatty recorded the opinion of Samuel Birch on the catalogue slip: "This is more probably a calf, the action is more like a calf than a bull - this has probably been a toy". Gatty also noted "Formerly in the Hertz coll: vide the cat: p 169 no, 2445".
