Bawden was an established book illustrator and commercial designer; he produced advertisements, posters, book illustrations, book jackets and wallpapers for a number of organisations, including BP, Shellmex, Twinings, London Transport and the Curwen Press. He was one of the Great Bardfield Artists, a community based in Great Bardfield, Essex.
