Information

Two-handled mortar carved from black basalt, with high everted walls, direct rim and flat base. Smoothed surface except the central depression which is rougher. Both handles are shaped like the goddess Hathor. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Chipped, pitted, surface dirt, label sellotaped on surface, label adhered to surface, worn, surface loss. Marked in red 115/4. Sold at Sotheby's 1913, 20-24 Jan Lot 115/4: Three tall straight-sided Mortars, in stone, 11 in., 9.5 in. and 6 in. high; another, roughly shaped in a large piece of granite. 4"
