Mount Saint Hilarion and the Castle Ruins

Information

Bomberg was stimulated by nature and its rhythms. He preferred to paint his own reaction to the landscape rather than exactly what he saw. This picture of a ruined castle in Cyprus expresses his delight in the Mediterranean countryside. In his excitement he used his fingers as well as his brush to apply the paint. His bright colours describe the sun’s intense heat and the scorched hillside.
