Mrs Theodore Wright as "Mrs Alving" in "Ghosts"

Henrik Ibsen's play 'Ghosts' had its London premiere on 13 March 1891. Alice Austin, known as Mrs Theodore Wright, played the role of Mrs Alving. The play was staged by the Independent Theatre Society, who at the time were using the Royalty Theatre on Dean Street in Soho, not far from Tottenham Court Road. There was another London production of 'Ghosts' in 1893. Sickert made sketches relating to the two productions, returning to the skethces in 1920s to produce prints such as this one.
