Cartonnage mummy mask with gilded face. Damaged condition with three packets of loose fragments. Previously stuffed for suppport with cotton wool and newspaper pages from 1922. CONDITION NOTE (1998): Has been excessivly padded with newspaper and wadding which has caused some damage, the face has been squashed, the textile is torn in places and the gesso decoration is cracked, lifting and flaking, there are other areas of damage, label adhered. Wellcome Historical Medical Museum accession no. 61498, purchased at Stevens' Auction Rooms Ltd., London, 18 & 19 July 1922, lot 412: "Three mummy masks, a sandal, and other cartonnage, from Egypt, Amherst Collection". Previously sold at Sotheby's, London, 13-17 June, 1921, Lot 327/12, "Eleven cartonnage Mummy Masks, in linen, stucco, painted and gilt, and a portion of gilt Mummy Wrapping, of ornamental design; XXV Dyn. To Roman period".
