Mummy Wrapping

Cutting from a mummy bandage. Finely woven, thin and cream in colour (date uncertain but probably New Kingdom or later). Folded in two and pinned to a sheet of paper with the following handwritten text in ink: "This piece of bandage taken off a mummy buried [?] 2000, years before Christ". Paper now broken across the fold. According to the donor it has been in the Goulder family since the early 1800s and was owned by his great grandfather, John Gorsuch who lived at Litherland Park. In the 19th and early 20th century mummies were sometimes unwrapped before an audience. It was popular to distribute cuttings of the bandages to those who had gathered to see the spectacle.
