WAG 2019.5
Information
In 1890 Mackintosh was awarded the Alexander Thompson travelling scholarship and in the spring of 1891 he embarked on a grand tour of Italy visiting more than 23 Italian towns and cities. According to his diary, Mackintosh spent 8th April exploring Naples, visiting Trinita Maggiore, Santa Chiara, the Duomo and Porta Capuana. His last stop that day was the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine where he admired the “very good tower of which I took a sketch”. Although this drawing is dated 9 April it was actually sketched the day before.
