You may be wondering what a New Zealand bank note has to do with the story of women’s suffrage in Liverpool.
It features an image of the country's most famous suffragist, Kate Sheppard. Kate was born here in Liverpool, and emigrated with her family aged 20. She became a committed campaigner on social issues and advancing the cause of women’s rights. As a result, New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote in 1893.
In 1991, she was commemorated by her image being added to the 10-dollar bill and celebrated in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens by a memorial walk lined with white camellias, symbols of the fight for women’s suffrage.
