The inscription beneath this watercolour indicates that this work is inspired by the story 'Nursery Reminiscences' from the book 'The Ingoldsby Legends'. 'The Ingoldsby Legends' were a collection of poems, myths and legends written by author and clergyman Richard Harris Barham (1788 - 1845). 'Nursery Reminiscences' was a poem about a young boy recieving a gift a from his uncle for being good, shortly afterwards he was punished for ruining his new clothes.
