Ointment Jar

1977.112.20

Information

Cylindrical jar with a flaring rim. Jars of this shape were used to store perfumed ointments and unguents. The lid is quite a loose fit and perhaps does not belong with the jar. The base of the jar is marked in pencil 517 (Beni Hasan tomb 517 contained a "small vase and cover") and the underside of the lid is marked in pencil 486 (maybe Abydos 486 A'08 that contained "seven stone vessels" S. R. Snape 'Mortuary Assemblages' p. 258). CONDITION NOTE (1998): Worn, surface dirt. Compare with W. M. F. Petrie, Stone and Metal Vases (London, 1937) no. 125. Danson Catalogue 2 no. 60.
