Information

This drawing was part of a collection of drawings and watercolours purchased by the Walker Art Gallery from Mrs Pelham. The collection was made by artists who were members of the Liverpool Sketch Club (not to be confused with the well-known and still active, Liver Sketching Club). Mrs Pelham was married to the artist James Pelham who was a former President of the Club. The subject of this portrait is unknown. The date of the drawing comes from an inscription found on the mount, and is written in an unrecognised hand. Therefore we cannot be certain of its authenticity. In 1874, Garraway was a resident of Liverpool, so the date is possible.
