When peace was declared at the end of the war it came as a huge relief after five long years of fighting and devastating losses. Celebration and reflection were expressed in many ways. Lewis's, a large department store chain with headquarters in Ranelagh Street, Liverpool, rewarded its loyal employees with a generous week's wages. The text on this wage packet reads: 'One Week's Salary in Celebration of Peace, 1919. To Miss Grogan With compliments of Lewis's Ltd.' Ethel Grogan worked in the china department.
