Information

In 1934, the Queensway tunnel was opened by Queen Elizabeth's Grandfather, King George V. To cope with the increase of post war road congestion the Mersey Tunnel act was passed in 1965 to permit the construction of a second tunnel. Construction began in 1966 by Edmund Nuttall Ltd and on June 24 1971, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Kingsway tunnel between Liverpool and Wallasey. Eric Nixon, Conservative Councillor for St Michael's Ward was invited to attend the event with his wife Sybil Nixon in his official capacity.
