The Orchard

Helen Allingham (1848 - 1926) specialised in picturesque cottage scenes, much influenced by Birket Foster. Her work is characterised by great delicacy of natural observation and a feeling for the mellow texture of old buildings. She wanted to record the appearance of traditional country cottages and farm buildings near her home in Surrey because they were threatened by the creeping suburbanisation of the Home Counties.
