Order of service, 'The blessing of the civil partnership of Kieran Bohan & Warren Hartley'

MOL.2017.67.2

Information

In 2012 Kieran Bohan and Warren Hartley became the first couple in the UK to have a religious civil partnership ceremony at Ullet Road Unitarian Church, Liverpool. They later converted their civil partnership into a marriage at St George's Hall in November 2015, followed by a service of thanksgiving at St Bride's Church, Percy Street, after same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK in 2014. The heart of their civil partnership service was based on an ancient blessing of the relationship between two men, known as 'Brother-Making'. The couple stated the following in this order of service, "The Equality Act 2010 made this possible - following a public consultation, it became law in December 2011. Ullet Road Unitarian Church registered to conduct civil partnerships on its premises in April 2012, only the second church in the country to do so. We thank the Unitarian Church for making this happen". Kindly donated to the collections of the Museum of Liverpool by Kieran Bohan.
