Painted Jar

Information

Buff-coloured ware with painted concentric circles in dull red paint. Ovoid shaped vessel with two lug handles on the outermost shoulder. Broken and repaired. Some doubt if some of the decoration is over painted. One of the previous owners, Amy Urlin, assisted W. M. F. Petrie on his excavation of the cemetery at Abydos in 1901, which may have been the source of this object. Compare shape with W. M. F. Petrie, ‘Prehistoric Egypt Corpus’ (London, 1921) D 67c. CONDITION NOTE 1998: Previous repair with areas of fill, concretions, adhesive residue, worn, chipped, surface loss, surface dirt.
