Palace of the Popes, Avignon

Information

This is a view of the Palace of the Popes (Palais des Papes) in Avignon, in the South of France. The 12th-century arched Avignon bridge spans the River Rhone. The entire city of Avignon in the distance is built on top of a colossal rampart lining the river bank, from which the Palace rises, both old and new parts. The artist wrote to the Walker Art Gallery that 'the drawing was done from a very rough pencil sketch... - one of several I did on a brief visit to Avignon in 1926. I usually work from pencil sketches, with brief written notes of colour. The foreground is on the Villeneuve-les-Avignon bank of the Rhone -- the new town, presumably, though that is also pretty old...The subject...was quite irresistible, being the most comprehensive views of Avignon itself that one could hope for.'
