Peacock - a Study

Information

A watercolour by Edwin Alexander, 'A Study', was selected by the Hanging Committee for the Walker Art Gallery's Liverpool Annual Autumn Exhibition in 1901 (cat. no. 757). It was also illustrated in the catalogue. A local blockmaker, W Wolfenden, was responsible for printing these illustrations. The Walker purchased a number of original drawings from a descendent of Wolfenden in 1969. The drawings, including this one, may have been used by Wolfenden for the catalogue illustrations. The Tate collection includes a watercolour by Alexander from 1905 called 'Peacock and Python' (N01965). Peacocks were a recurring subject in the artist's work.
