Information

This is one of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. Pericles (495 - 429 BCE) was an Athenian statesman and general. The Age of Pericles (457 - 430 BCE) is considered to have been very influential, not only to the city of Athens but to all of Greece. During this time, Athens became what is called 'the world's first democracy', although women, foreigners, the enslaved and formerly enslaved were not allowed to vote.
