Pebble probably used to crush and grind pigment for cosmetics.
Marked in black ink with provenance data. Label stuck to the surface inscribed 'Hofmuseum' in black print; the number '257' printed in black on a small white label stuck to the surface.
CONDITION NOTE (1998): Pitted, chipped, surface dirt, old labels adhered to surface.
Purchased at Stevens's, London, 23 - 24 September 1930 lot 640: "Moulds for amulets, nail burnisher, haematite rubber, game pieces, amulets of Bes, and other Egyptian antiquities (some from Vienna Museum)". Previously in the collections of K.k. Naturhistorisches Hofmuseum, Vienna.
