Petra is an archaeological site in Jordan, a 2000 year old ancient city cut into the rock of a deep valley. It is not certain when, or even if, Muller visited the city. He made trips to Egypt and Turkey in 1838 and 1843 respectively, but research has not yet confirmed whether he went elsewhere in the Middle East at the time.

Muller and David Roberts were the earliest significant British artists to visit Egypt. Muller was fascinated by the clothing, bazaars and slave market of Cairo and much of his work in public collections reflects this interest.
