Information

Mounted photographic print by Thomas H. Wilton, Marine Photo, San Francisco, ca. 1889. Group image of the crew of the four-masted barque Holt Hill, W. Price & Co., Liverpool. The vessel, captained by George Sutherland, was wrecked on 13 November 1889 whilst en route from Rio de Janeiro to Calcutta. The surviving crew were shipwrecked for eight days on the island of St Paul, in the Indian Ocean, before being rescued by the barque Coorong and brought to Adelaide, Australia. Among the survivors of the wreck was Charles Herbert Lightoller (possibly top row, far right), then a young apprentice, who would go on to survive the sinking of the Titanic.
