Silver gelatin print by unknown photographer, ca. 1912-1914. Image shows a roadside shrine containing a human-sized clay figure that appears to be dressed in Western clothing and smoking a pipe while holding a cigar in its hand. Large bowls at the foot of the figure contain mugs and other smaller vessels. The shrine consists of four wooden posts and a flat roof. The figure sits in the centre on a 'throne' with a cloth-covered seat. From the collection of William John Roberts, Liverpool-born merchant for The Lagos Stores, Ltd. Based in Nigeria, 1912-1914.
