Silver gelatin print by W.E. Williams, 1942. Image shows a smoke screen being tested by crew aboard S.S. Trader, Harrison Line, during the Battle of the Atlantic. Williams noted on verso, "Smoke float to protect ship when being pursued by enemy craft, notably submarine. We used these as target when firing 4" [naval] gun".
