First Lieutenant John McIntosh Kell had served with Semmes in his previous command, the cruiser Sumter, and is shown standing by the eight inch smooth bore gun with his hand on the breech-rope. The engine-room skylight can be seen with bars over the glass. Note the washing hanging in the rigging.
