Information
Silver gelatin print dated 1944 (Crown Copyright). Caption on verso: "When a crippled ship is to be taken in tow the first job is to get a line on board her. A Chief Petty Officer fires a costin gun line on the deck of a crippled ship. To the line is attached a rope, to the rope of the hauser, and to the hauser a cable. The cable is hauled by the rescued ship, and whenall is secure the ships in tow. Smart sailors carry out this tricky operation in 15 minutes. It is a job of seamanship often necessary in the war of the Atlantic. That's why it's part of the realistic taining given U-Boat hunters in the Navy's battle training base HMS Western Isles."
