Pierhead from the Mersey

WAG 8620

Information

This distant view of the Pierhead shows the recently completed Three Graces (Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Mersey Docks and Harbour Board Building) behind the landing stage busy with commuting ferries. An atmospheric effect is created by the misty air enveloping the Liver Building, with a subtle etching method being used to merely hint at the docks and a multitude of ship masts. This etching belongs to a series by Walcot depicting major rivers, ‘The Arteries of Britain’. Walcot was much respected in the 1920s and 1930s as an architectural draughtsman whose impressionistic drawings enhanced the grandeur of buildings.
