Liverpool pilot Thomas H Webster is thought to have had this notebook with him during the 1939 Charles Livingston disaster, when the pilot boat No.1 Charles Livingston ran aground off Ainsdale beach near Southport during a heavy storm. 23 men died, Thomas Webster survived the incident and managed to make it ashore. Webster was a pilot during both world wars. He retired from the service in 1948, and died in 1968.
