Queen Elizabeth was crowned on June 2nd 1953. It was the first ever coronation to be televised and 27 million people in the UK watched it live. In this portrait the young Queen is shown wearing the George IV State Diadem, a crown with 1,333 diamonds featuring roses, shamrocks and thistles. She wore this on her way to Westminster Abbey for the ceremony.
