Plinth

LL 1025

Information

This plinth is one of a pair and it was made to support one of the largest vases Wedgwood ever made in jasper. It is decorated in classical motifs and would have supported a copy of the Borghese vase, an ancient Greek marble vase made for the Roman market. The relief around the body of the vase shows worshippers of Bacchus escorting a drunken Silenus. The vase is called the Borghese Vase after the Borghese family who acquired the original marble vase in 1566.
