Information

A study from life rather than a portrait: artists would keep such studies in their studios, copying them into larger multi-figured compositions when needed and sometimes using the same face more than once. Rembrandt (Fabritius’s master) often painted studies of heads, but regarded many of them as completed works for sale rather than simply as preparatory material.
