Silver gelatin print mounted on card. Portrait by E.M. Cole of James Sayaolu Johnson, "Ife Olorun" House, No. 57 Tokunboh Street, Lagos, Nigeria. Handwritten ink inscription on bottom left, recto: "J.S. Johnson as, Deputy High Chief Ruler of the Independent Order of Rechabites, Dist No 101, & Superintendent of the Juvenile Tent, 'Unity' No 2610 for the year 1915 NIGERIA. 10/11/15". The Independent Order of Rechabites was founded in Salford, Lancashire, in 1835 as part of the temperance movement, promoting complete abstenance from drinking alcohol. From the collection of William John Roberts, Liverpool-born merchant for The Lagos Stores, Ltd. Based in Nigeria, 1912-1914.
