Portrait of Mona Lisa
WAG 2785
Information
This painting may be an early copy of the famous portrait, Mona Lisa, by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It shows more of the columns behind the sitter, and of the chair arm, than is visible in the original, now in the Louvre Museum, Paris. The Walker’s painting is one of a number of known copies.
The sitter in the Mona Lisa (a shortened form of Madonna – my lady – Lisa) is thought to represent Lisa Gherardini, a Florentine silk merchant’s wife.
