Information

An abraded foot of a cylindrical amphora of Roman date. The fabric is dark buff - mid brown on the external surface, with a core of dark brown buff-grey fabric. The amphora fragment is from southern Spain, and dates from the late 1st to the 2nd century AD. Marked ‘Foot of Amphora/Meols/Cheshire’ in three lines; part of an old hexagonal museum label in red still adheres to surface. Found on the shore at Meols. Meols catalogue number 228 (Griffiths, D; Philpott, R; Egan, G, 2007).
