Power Figure (Nkishi)

Mankishi (singular nkishi) are essentially containers of powerful agencies and magical charges. Ritual specialists activate them in special rituals in order to cure illnesses, punish wrong-doing and to combat witchcraft and sorcery. Hutchings bought this figure from the London dealer Philip Goldman after consulting William Fagg at the British Museum, who recommended it as being “in good style.”
