ISM.2018.6.2
Information
Printed minutes of a special general meeting of the Newcastle upon Tyne Anti-Slavery Society (possibly the Society for Promoting the Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions) which was held in Brunswick Place Chapel on 11th August 1830. Amongst other issues, they resolved that whilst they deemed it inexpedient to manumit the whole slave population of the West Indies at once, steps should be taken to ameliorate the conditions under which they lived. Such steps included prevention of compulsory separation of families, securing rights of person and property and that all slave children born after a particular date be declared free.
Further resolutions included the aim to promote Ladies' Anti-Slavery Scoieties.
