The Raising of Lazarus
This biblical scene shows Christ reviving the dead body of Lazarus from his cave tomb. The two sisters of Lazarus are visible on the left side of the painting, looking on in astonishment. The contrasting light and shocked expressions of the surrounding figures heighten the drama in this work. This painting is identical in size to Pittoni’s Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, also in the Walker Art Gallery. The two paintings were probably commissioned for the same series in the 18th century.
