Information
Carter’s work uses found objects, combined in new and often unexpected ways. He said, ‘Objects fascinate me...because of their capacity to reflect aspects of our sensory and psychological condition.’ This sculpture highlights the beauty and form of the wheel. It is a reference to Marcel Duchamp’s (1887-1968)1913 sculpture Bicycle Wheel, which presented the wheel as a work of art in its own right.
Carter exhibited in several John Moores Painting Prizes, including 1982 and 1985. He was also a popular teacher, hugely influential on generations of artists.
