Relief of Seated Male

Marble relief, showing a man seated in right profile on a high-backed throne. He wears a chiton and a mantle over his shoulders. His feet which have sandals rest on a low stool. It is likely that the figure held in his raised left arm,an object, possibly a drinking vessel. The object may had been originally in paint. The subject is either a deity (Zeus or perhaps Dionysos) or a hero. This type of relief is likely to have been an offering rather than a funerary sculpture. The recorded findspots for many of these sculptures suggest they were produced in the Ionian workshops of the islands in the Eastern Aegean and in 'East Greece' (modern day Turkey).
