Rhodope (Costume Design for 'Phoenix')

WAG 1668

Information

This watercolour painting is a costume design by George W. Harris (1978-1929) for the character 'Rhodope' in the play 'Phoenix'. 'Phoenix' was a romantic costume drama written by the poet and critic Lascelles Abercrombie (1881-1938), intended for the London Market. The play was picked up by the producer Basil Dean (1888-1978), who launched it at St Martin's Theatre in London on 20th January 1924. It was part of a double bill with the play 'Grauch', written by Gordon Bottomley (1874-1948). Harris worked closely with Dean throughout his career as an artist, producing many costume and set designs for Dean's plays.
