The Risen Christ Greeting the Three Marys at the Tomb
WAG 1995.104
Information
Schivaone was born in Croatia but was mainly active in Venice. He was a painter and etcher. Francis Richardson argues that he was highly innovative as an etcher and 'his technique was unlike that of any contemporary' (Richardson, 1980). In particular Schiavone made use of hatching to convey tone, form and light.
This may not be an exact scene from the Bible, although it could be Matthew 15:21-8, in the New Testament. Richardson writes that the disctinctive composition 'seems to reflect Central Italian influences' on the artist.
