Son of a tailor, George Barret Snr (about 1732 - 1784) made his reputation in the 1750s with a series of topographical paintings of the landscapes around Dublin. He was greatly influenced by his friend, the statesman Edmund Burke, and his 1757 publication, 'A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful'. His son, George Barret Jr, also has work in Walker Art Gallery's collection.
