Rivington Water

East was a friend of Lever and often visited his Rivington estate, near Bolton. Here Lever's house, The Bungalow, can just be seen through the trees on the hillside at the left, and beneath it is Lever Park, landscaped by Lever as a public country park. The Rivington Reservoirs are also in the distance. Although this is a view of a rather artificial Lancashire landscape, East has given it a composition with framing trees, high viewpoint and distant water, borrowed from Claude and 17th-century classical landscape.
